iDEAL

Like giropay in Germany, Dutch banks established the iDEAL money transfer standard. Approximately 50% of all e-commerce payments in the Netherlands are processed with iDEAL. Offering iDEAL is a vital success factor for e-commerce businesses wanting to sell in the Netherlands. Customers use their familiar and trusted online banking environment to complete the transaction, just like regular online banking.

iDEAL is a bank transfer payment method where the consumer authorizes the payment by logging into their bank. The data disclosed in the online transfer is encrypted using SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) to ensure security and prevent tampering.

Special Requirements for iDEAL Mobile

To ensure successful redirection and a smooth experience for users on mobile devices, adhere to the following best practices:

  • Always open the issuerAuthenticationURL in the system browser or a trusted app.
  • Do not present iDEAL issuer pages in an in-app browser or webview.
  • If redirection from your app is not seamless, notify the customer clearly:

    “You will now be redirected to the app or mobile website of your bank.”

Technical Notes:

  • There is only one issuerAuthenticationURL per transaction. It works for both desktop and mobile flows.
  • Issuer behavior may vary. Some banks treat tablet users as mobile, others treat them like desktop users.
  • If the customer’s banking app supports iDEAL Mobile, they will be given the option to complete the payment using their banking app or via mobile web.
  • The banking app might prompt the customer to install or update the app before completing the transaction.

Refunds

You can initiate refunds for iDEAL payments using the Refund payment with reference endpoint. Refunds are subject to the following rules and limitations:

Key Considerations

  • The refunded amount must not exceed the amount of the original capture.
  • Refunds are only supported when processing iDEAL transactions through specific partners:
    • EMS
    • PPRO
    • Rabobank Omnikassa
    • EVO Payments (Debtor Management)
  • Direct bank integrations with Dutch banks do not support refunds through Computop Paygate.
  • For EMS:
    • Only a single refund request is allowed per transaction.
    • Multiple partial refunds are not supported.
